Active member at Faces Online and Asset A&F – What does it look like?

My name is Harry Feringa and I have been the Vice-Chairman of the Faces Online committee, in short Faces, since the start of this year. Together with the Chairman, It is my task to make sure the planning of the articles goes as smooth as possible. I have almost finished the study Business Economics and will start with my master thereafter. I have written this article together with Romano Ruijtenburg, an editor of Faces Online. Romano will start with the master Finance in the upcoming academic year.

Asset | Accounting & Finance, also called A&F, is the financial study association of Tilburg University with currently 2000 members. By becoming an active at A&F you can become a member of a committee to get to know companies besides your study that might be a potential future employer. In addition, there is also a wide range of informal activities that offer the opportunity to meet new people with the same interests as you.

“Every year the study association organizes many activities, both formal as informal.”

Every year the study association organizes many activities, both formal as informal. There are formal activities such as Accounting Insight and FinanceDay. Because I have visited a few of these days myself, I got a more concrete picture of what certain professions in the Accountancy and Finance sector currently look like. For example, at Accounting Insight I discovered in what way the role of the accountant is changing enormously due to the increasing role of technology and that it is not ‘boring’ accounting. At some formal activities there is a drink afterwards where there is the possibility to speak to employees of various companies and ask questions to see if a certain company suits you. There are also formal activities which are very active, for example, an evening was for organized for EY with an escape room.

During the academic year, there are informal activities regularly organized for the active members where the atmosphere is always great. When I arrived as a newcomer myself, I was well received and the other members immediately gave the feeling I fitted in. My first event was the announcement drink of the new board of Asset | Accounting & Finance. Throughout the year, there are several drinks and the atmosphere often continues into the late hours. In addition to the many drinks, there are also other activities, such as the annual football tournament or an active members day. This year’s second edition of the active members day we went to the Efteling.

So, within Asset | Accounting & Finance there are various committees, including Faces Online. Faces Online is the committee that publishes Finance and Accounting related interviews, blogs and columns on a weekly basis. I was a part of this committee for the past year. I have always been interested in the news about Finance and Accountancy and with Faces I have the opportunity to get in touch with various business people and am able to interview them. For example, I recently conducted several interviews with people who work at the Amsterdam Zuidas and then wrote an article about it. A weekly meeting is held in which we discuss the articles in progress and brainstorm about interesting topics for future publications. You will only spend a maximum of a few hours a week on Faces Online, which is why this committee can be perfectly combined with your studies!

The weekly publications on our own Faces Online website are very diverse: from interviews with CEOs to columns in which you as a Faces member, can give your own opinion on a topic within the world of Finance or Accountancy. You can think of a column about the loan system, or as I myself have written as a true football fan, an article about the large amounts of money in the soccer world. In addition, we also regularly publish articles about student life. Because you have the freedom to write articles about topics that interest you, you can deepen your knowledge about these topics and give other students the opportunity to do the same. In short, Faces Online only deals with topics that you find interesting as a student!

“Because you are working on Finance and Accountancy related matters every week, you not only deepen your knowledge, but you also broaden your network and this committee and/or study association will look great on your CV.”

Because you are working on Finance and Accountancy related matters every week, you not only deepen your knowledge, but you also broaden your network and this committee and/or study association will look great on your CV. You also have a lot of contact with the enthusiastic committee members and the other members of Asset | Accounting & Finance. Of course, this also includes a lot of fun. Do not hesitate any longer and come and take a look at Faces Online and Asset | Accounting & Finance!
