Professional investors show how it’s done

By Ruben Knooren

Last month the members of A&F Investments got an informative guest lecture of one of their partners, IBS Capital Allies. The Portfolio Manager, Koen Ronda, and the Analyst, Martin Kleinbussink, gave a very powerful presentation on behalf this successful Asset Management company. This firm focusses on three important elements. Firstly, the essence of managing investments is not managing returns, but it is managing the risks. The limitation of large losses will result in a good return on the long-term. Secondly, IBS believes the use of evaluative models is way more effective than focusing on human decision making. At last, IBS is a huge proponent of investing sustainable. By excluding the non-sustainable companies, you invest  in a better future. These three main elements are reflected in their successful strategy.

The members of A&F Investments were also taught the method of working of IBS Capital Allies. IBS makes use of a lot of research techniques and methods, which they use to determine the correct value of stocks and other financial products. With the help of both qualitative and quantitative methods, IBS investigates if a certain financial product is worth adding to their portfolio. Furthermore, IBS showed how to screen effectively, which ratios IBS believes are important and which qualitative factors have influence on the final call.

At last, Koen Ronda and Martijn Kleinbussink presented two business cases, in which two different stocks were considered and eventually they gave their advice on these stocks. This was especially interesting for the A&F Investment members, since they explained one step at a time how an analyst and portfolio manager perform a stock analysis.

Finally, Koen and Martin took a look at the portfolio of A&F Investments. The portfolio was fully screened by these two business men and every stock was evaluated individually. They also provided some usable advices and A&F Investments will definitely make use of these in the near future.

On behalf of A&F Investments, I would like to thank Koen Ronda and Martijn Kleinbussink of IBS Capital Allies for their interesting guest lecture.
