An Investing Committee, Why? Most of us did it to deepen our knowledge, refine our skills, and forge meaningful connections in fields that interest us. Such exploration compels us to extend our curiosity beyond the classroom and seek meaningful communities which share our enthusiasm. That is why the student-run investment club at Tilburg University, A&F Investments, is so special: it provides a setting where our drive and passion can flourish. There is no greater fulfillment than pursuing your curiosity, especially when it leads to remarkable achievements. My time at A&F Investments has continuously deepened my interest in financial markets through projects that made a substantial impact on our fund. For instance, introducing a new macroeconomic framework for risk budgeting and strategic allocations not only improved A&F Investments’ portfolio performance, but it also shaped my passion for active investing. The Chair As Chairman of A&F Investments, my mission is to empower Tilburg University’s most motivated finance students with passion, expertise, and meaningful connections. We pursue our vision by actively managing a five-digit, long-only equity portfolio with one clear goal: Beat the market—a target that 90% of active equity funds worldwide fail to achieve. Despite these odds, we are proud of our success, having achieved a 7.7% alpha return over our benchmark in 2024. The Future Such experiences clarified my future path as I cannot wait to further explore my interests through a career in asset management. It just so happens that A&F Investments has equipped me with the technical skillset and enthusiasm to excel in the fast-paced world of financial markets
Working at KPMG – Digital Audit Associate
Can you briefly introduce yourself, what you studied, and what inspired you to pursue a career in accountancy? I am Ricardo Walrave, 25 years old, originally from Vlissingen. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Finance & Control at Hogeschool Zeeland in Vlissingen and then, through a pre-master, pursued a master’s in Accountancy at Tilburg University. I am now following the post-master Accountancy program, also in Tilburg, while working as an Audit Associate at KPMG in the Breda office. Over the past two years, I have been involved in many enjoyable committees at Asset Financials and am still active in the Cooking Club committee. Some highlights of my time with the association include co-organizing the StudyTour to Brazil and last year’s fifth lustrum celebration. What attracted me to auditing was the opportunity to work with a variety of clients. This allows you to gain extensive knowledge about different industries, understand how businesses operate, and discover where your interests lie. Another aspect I really enjoy is that no two weeks are ever the same. What specifically attracted you to KPMG as an employer, and how did you experience the transition to working life? I got in touch with KPMG through the Accounting Expedition organized by Asset Asset Financials. During my visit, I immediately felt a connection due to the welcoming atmosphere at the office. That experience led me to apply right away. After spending six months as a thesis intern and another six months as a working student, I started full-time last September. The transition to working life took some adjustment in the first few months. Having focused primarily on studying and student life for years, I had to find a balance between a 40-hour workweek and my personal life. However, since I had already gained work experience during my last year of studies, I had a good idea of what to expect, which made the transition smoother. A great aspect of KPMG is that ambitions, requests, or challenges can always be openly discussed with colleagues, and solutions are actively sought. To support this, every new employee at KPMG is assigned a buddy, who provides guidance and assistance. You both work in audit now—what have you learned so far, and which moments stand out to you? In just a few months of working, I have rapidly gained knowledge about auditing and related areas. The first month included an onboarding period followed by two weeks of Audit Foundations training. This provided a strong foundation for client work and was a great opportunity to connect with other new hires from various KPMG offices across the country. I am also part of KPMG’s Digital Audit Track. As part of this program, dedicated time is allocated in my schedule to follow training sessions that enhance my digital skills and contribute to innovation within the audit field. In the first year, we have the opportunity to earn accreditations for tools like Alteryx and Power BI, which can then be applied directly to client work. This helps teams complete tasks more efficiently and effectively. Which initiatives or activities within KPMG make a difference in workplace culture for you? KPMG invests a lot in fostering a good atmosphere among colleagues. Regular office- or region-wide events are organized, and we have a weekly Friday afternoon social gathering. Beyond these official events, spontaneous plans often arise among colleagues to grab a drink after work or organize larger outings together. My personal highlight was a weekend trip to Dublin last October. What were your expectations about working in audit and at KPMG, and how do they compare to reality? Initially, I knew KPMG mainly from its logo and the huge headquarters in Amstelveen, which gave me the impression that it was a massive organization where employees might just be numbers. However, my perspective completely changed when I joined. The office introduction was very personal, and within a few days, I had already met most of my colleagues. Instead of feeling like just another employee, I found that KPMG values individuals and their unique contributions. The Future of Audit: How do you see this field evolving? I expect significant changes in the accountancy profession. Many (AI) tools are already available to streamline our work. For example, at KPMG, we frequently use RobotX and Datasnipper, which automate a large portion of our tasks. Where we once had to manually input data, these tools now allow us to complete extensive work with just a few clicks. Given these rapid advancements, I foresee the traditional aspects of auditing becoming increasingly automated, with auditors focusing more on analysis, evaluation, and providing substantive explanations for their findings. Beyond digital transformation, regulatory developments are also shaping the industry. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is an example of a major regulatory shift. While some companies are already required to comply, many more will be affected in the near future. In response, KPMG offers an ESG Track alongside the regular audit and Digital Audit Track, allowing employees to dedicate part of their time to sustainability-related work. What advice would you give students about working at KPMG? I would encourage students to focus on what personally appeals to them in a company. I also highly recommend joining a study association (preferably Asset Financials 😉) to explore different firms. A (thesis) internship is a great way to determine whether the work and office culture suit you. What drew me to KPMG was the opportunity to work with diverse clients and gain broad industry knowledge. No two weeks are the same. Additionally, KPMG supports me in obtaining my RA title while allowing me to grow step by step in the audit field, with a particular focus on Digital Audit. Want to learn more? Behind the Finance expedition 2024
In this week’s article, Yunjie Chen shares her experiences as a committee member of the Finance Expedition 2024 and what this expedition is all about. The idea behind this expedition is to introduce students to the world of finance in a unique and interactive way, while also providing companies with a platform to discover young talent. Finance Expedition in Brief The Finance Expedition is organized by Asset Financials and Asset Econometrics and is specifically designed for students interested in Corporate Finance, Asset Management, and Risk Management. This three-day expedition, including overnight stays, offers challenging business cases, personal stories from professionals, and valuable networking opportunities that can open new doors. Program Development In February 2024, we began preparations for the 2024 edition as a committee. After hours of brainstorming sessions, weekly meetings, and a team-building activity, we finalized the program. Everyone within the committee had their own tasks and carried them out diligently. After the summer, everything accelerated, and registrations started pouring in. Internally, we were busy processing both administrative and promotional tasks. We held college talks, promoted the event online, and personally approached students with details about the expedition. Besides promotion, we also had to arrange transportation and accommodations. Logistically, we chose the Van der Valk Hotel in Breukelen for overnight stays. The Big Days: Success and Satisfaction Day 1: Rotterdam – Nerisa On the first day, we left Tilburg early and headed to Rotterdam, where we were warmly welcomed by investment company Nerisa. We received an extensive presentation about the company and its focus areas. Following that, the students worked on a challenging equity research case, which they later presented to Nerisa professionals. The day ended with a lunch where students could ask questions and network. Day 2: Utrecht – BDO The second day featured an in-house day at BDO in Utrecht. In addition to audit services, BDO has an M&A department, which was the focus of the day. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and started the day with a presentation about the Corporate Finance and Transaction Services departments. After the presentation, we worked on a financial due diligence case, with the results being discussed in detail. The day concluded with a group lunch, where students once again had the opportunity to ask questions. Day 3: Amsterdam and Utrecht – Deloitte & Zanders The third and final day focused on Risk Management. In the morning, we traveled to Amsterdam’s Zuidas district to visit Deloitte. We received an extensive presentation, followed by a challenging case on The Ocean Cleanup. Each group presented their findings at the end. After a group lunch and a tour of the departments, we headed to Utrecht for an in-house day at Zanders. Zanders, a consultancy specializing in treasury and risk management, welcomed us with an introductory presentation. The group was then split into two: one group worked on a case, while the other participated in a Zanders escape room. After the swap, the day ended with a group dinner, where students had the opportunity to engage in in-depth conversations with Zanders professionals. This marked the end of the Finance Expedition 2024. Challenges Along the Way During the organization of the Finance Expedition 2024, planning proved to be a significant challenge. Scheduling meetings with seven committee members is not easy, as everyone has a busy agenda. One tip that helped me was to schedule the next meeting at the end of each session using a tool like When2meet or LettuceMeet. This saves a lot of communication afterward. Additionally, flexibility is crucial: physical meetings are important for comprehensive agenda points, but shorter meetings are often more efficient online. What I Learned Organizing the Finance Expedition taught me valuable skills, such as planning, teamwork, networking, and communication. Additionally, it gave me more insight into my own ambitions within the finance world. It was very fulfilling to organize an event that helps others advance in their careers. I look back on this experience with pride and am confident that the Finance Expedition 2024 left a lasting impression – both on the students and the participating companies. Why Joining a Committee Is Worth It If you get the chance to join a committee, seize it with both hands. It’s an experience that will help you grow both personally and professionally. Organizing this event gave me insights not only into the financial world but also into my own skills and ambitions. My Experience with Asset Financials I have been a member of Asset Financials since February 2023. In addition to organizing the finance expedition, I have also been part of the financial business dinner 2023 committee which was a valuable experience as well. I appreciate how Asset Financials bridges the gap between students and companies and fully commits to this goal. The study association offers both formal and informal activities where you get the chance to meet new people! I highly recommend getting to know the association by signing up for a few events. It’s a valuable experience you don’t want to miss!

Advantages of joining a study association
Why you should become a member of ASSET | Accounting & Finance Student life is a unique time full of opportunities, experiences and growth. It is a time when you are not only challenged academically, but also given the opportunity to develop yourself personally and professionally. At ASSET | Accounting & Finance, our goal is to make your student life as valuable and memorable as possible. But what makes our study association so special, and why should you join? The power of networking and friendships One of the greatest benefits of being a member of ASSET | Accounting & Finance is building a network. As a member, you get the opportunity to make valuable contacts with fellow students, alumni and professionals in the finance world. We now have a network of more than 90 partners and 160 active members. These contacts can be invaluable for your future career. Moreover, long-term friendships often develop by organizing events together or simply socializing. Events that enrich your student life At ASSET | Accounting & Finance, we organize a wide range of events, both formal and informal. These include workshops, networking events, and company visits that help you gain more knowledge about your field and prepare you for your career. In total, our committees and the board organize 13 formal events. At the same time, we also host social drinks, parties, and sports activities, which are (almost always) free for active members, so you can make the most of your student life. There are approximately 30 of these events throughout the year. By participating in these activities, you create memories that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Academic support and study help We understand that studying can be tough at times, which is why as an association we offer summaries and study help. By studying together, you learn from each other and help each other achieve better results. In addition, being part of a committee helps create a healthy rhythm in your study and free time. This way you can be sure that your studies and leisure time remain in balance. Personal and professional growth At ASSET | Accounting & Finance, you will have the opportunity to further develop your organizational and social skills. By participating in a committee, you will learn to organize events and work together effectively in a group. These are skills that are vital not only during your studies, but also later in your career. And because you are free to choose which events you participate in, you decide how actively involved you are. A step closer to your career Being a member of ASSET | Accounting & Finance gives you an edge in the job market. Our association has more than 90 partners, spread throughout the Randstad and Noord-Brabant areas. These partners offer internships, work-study placements and career opportunities, allowing you to properly orientate on your future. Our members often have an edge in finding an internship or job, thanks in part to the valuable connections they gain through the association. International experiences We also offer opportunities to explore the world with other members. Our CityTrips and StudyTour take you abroad, where you not only learn about new cultures, but also expand your network and make great memories. The CityTrip consists of a weekend away within Europe. Whereas the StudyTour is instead a 10-day trip to a destination outside of Europe. This makes your student time extra special and gives you the chance to get to know the international world of finance and accountancy in a unique way. Accessible and affordable Another great advantage of being a member of ASSET | Accounting & Finance is that we make sure our activities are affordable. Whether you want to go to a social drink or an activity, it is often a lot cheaper (often even free) to do so through our association. This way we make sure that everyone gets the chance to enjoy their student time to the fullest. What makes ASSET | Accounting & Finance unique What sets us apart from other associations is the balance between formal and informal activities, the strong network of partners, and the freedom you have as a member. You are not required to attend everything, which means you can tailor your involvement to your needs and desires. In addition, we offer a great mix of academic and social opportunities, making us the association for anyone interested in accounting and finance. In short, ASSET | Accounting & Finance is about more than just studying. It is a place where you make memories for life, develop professionally and make new friends. Become a member and get the most out of your student time!
