I am Sander van den Bemt, 21 years old and living in Tilburg. After graduating from high school I knew for sure that I wanted to study economics. I chose the bachelor’s in Business Economics at Tilburg University and graduated last July. During the last six months of my bachelor\u2019s degree, I worked about two to three days a week as a student assistant accountant in the audit practice at Joore. I am currently working on my pre-master Accountancy at Nyenrode Business University, in addition to which I work four days a week at Joore as an assistant accountant in the audit practice.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the orientation for my master’s, two programs that appealed to me: Accountancy and Finance. During the open days, I was always told that both programs were very similar, which did not exactly make my choice any easier. Once I started working at Joore, it became increasingly clear to me what the Accountancy profession entailed. Because of this, I knew: this is what I want to study!<\/span><\/p>\n

My choice for Joore was fairly simple because I wanted to work at a regional accountancy firm and therefore have a better understanding of the corporate culture in Brabant and the surrounding area. And Joore also has plenty of internationally oriented companies in its portfolio. This makes the clients varied and ensures that each client receives a customized approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During my time as a working student, I saw many different audit clients so I wasn’t stuck on an assignment. By seeing and doing a lot, my knowledge grew incredibly fast since I only had some basic knowledge of accountancy during my education. However, I still have a long way to go before I can call myself a fully-fledged accountant. Fortunately, I can start this development by working at Joore for four days during my pre-masters studies.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am going through this development myself, but I am not doing it alone. Within Joore, working in teams is very important. In such a team you cannot operate alone and you will have to use the qualities of your other colleagues to achieve the best result. Compare it to the top-class sport. The team sprinters won gold at the Games last summer because they worked together as a team. That’s how we see our work too. Only we don’t go for a gold medal, but for a satisfied client who can assure his financial reporting. During the process of providing that assurance, we keep the lines of communication with both clients and colleagues short. After all, we are a service industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I hope to graduate from the master’s and post-masters program within the next five years and be well on my way to completing the practical training. The most important thing is not to feel any time pressure, but to go for my development, because only then I will get the best out of myself. Joore gives me this opportunity which gives me confidence in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are in doubt about your choice of study, do an internship or work as a student. You will learn the most in practice and you will find out what suits you and where your interests lie.
